High Class Work Experience for Catering and Hospitality Students.

Palace of WesminsterThis year, 25 catering students went on work experience for two weeks, one week during their holiday time and the other week during the college time in order to ensure they did not fall behind with their assessments.

All the second year students successfully completed their work experience in many top class London establishments. Some students had the opportunity to carry out their work experience in high class establishments like The Savoy, The Ritz, The Lanesborough, The House of Commons, The Landmark Hotel to name but a few and some chose to carry out their work experience locally in the Essex area.

The employers who provided work placements were impressed by how knowledgeable and how skilful the students were and on completion of their programme the majority of  students were offered full-time and part-time employment.

Some students were offered a full-time job at the end of this academic year but they have declined the offer and have decided to come back to the college to further their culinary skills at Level 3, to cook and serve the public on Gourmet Dinners and Thursday “Fine Dining Evenings” whilst other students will be starting employment as Chefs and some in the restaurants.

Tony Pecoraro, a Hospitality & Catering Lecturer had this to say:

Work placements are a vital part of our course and above all, are a fantastic opportunity for our students to be mentored by top class Chef in high class establishments. I am very pleased with all our catering students this year who achieved above and beyond what was expected.

Liberate your Style Aspiring fashion designer, Chloe Clay, 17 from Romford has been named a finalist in a prestigious fashion design competition, which has attracted global attention.

She is one of the entrants who have been shortlisted to create and showcase their unique designs at The Liberty Shopping Centre Catwalk Show in Romford on Friday 27th May 2016.

Chloe Clay, currently a student, at Havering College, took inspiration for her design from Vogue’s 2016 fashion reports. Chloe’s design incorporates luxurious glamour with floral feminine features creating the perfect romantic ensemble.

Chloe said: “I would never have thought that I would be a finalist at this years fashion show, I can’t wait to see my design brought to life.”

Now in its seventh year, the competition - run by The Liberty Shopping Centre in conjunction with iconic high street brand M&S - has received a record number of entries with designs flooding in from as far afield as Turkey, Japan and Australia.

Finalists in the competition, who range from budding students through to established designers, were tasked with designing an innovative women’s or menswear garment, which reflects what ‘style’ means to them, and creating a Pinterest mood board outlining their concept.

Following the catwalk show, one lucky finalist will be crowned The Liberty Fashion Designer of the year 2016 and will win a £1,000 injection into starting up a business or furthering their design career, which can go towards marketing, purchasing equipment or fabrics, hiring models for shows or attending key fashion events. They will also receive a trophy, plus expert business advice from M&S.

Following its popularity last year, the ‘People’s Choice Award’ will also return for a second year, the winner of which will receive a trophy, £100 gift card for The Liberty and a pair of Gold tickets to London Fashion Weekend in September.

Centre Manager, Jonathan Poole said: “Each year The Liberty Fashion Design Competition gets bigger and bigger and primary stage is increasingly competitive. This year has been no exception, with the quality of entries being the highest we’ve ever seen. Each concept demonstrates creative and innovative interpretations of style – it’s going to be quite a show!”

The catwalk show marks the start of the stylish shopping centre’s Fashion Show Weekend, which takes place on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May 2016 and will showcase the latest arrivals and seasonal collections from the centre’s hottest retailers.

Employer Apprenticeship Levy Explained

Apprenticeships Havering College

Understanding the Apprenticeship Levy isn’t as simple as it sounds. The Marketing department conducted research into the levy awareness and it became apparent that a significant number of businesses were unaware of its impact. That’s why, as a team, they decided to host Employer Levy Events.

These events, one for SME at their Ardleigh Green Campus and a second for Big Business at Canary Wharf, were a total success. In partnership with City and Guilds, the events offered an insight into exactly what the upcoming changes were, how they directly affected businesses and what the financial implications would be.

The feedback from both Events was extremely positive, particularly Epping Forest District Council:

It was a pleasure to meet you and the team from Havering College yesterday evening. I was really impressed by all the friendly and knowledgeable college staff that I spoke to. I found the presentation very useful and inspiring, the comments from Ofsted and the College’s values were particularly positive and resonated with EFDC’s values. I am very keen to start working with the college and discuss how you could help us take forward our successful apprenticeship programme under the new changes.

The College will be running future Apprenticeship Levy Events so if you’d like to know more or would be interested in booking your place call the Marketing Team on 01708 462850

Havering College STEM Centre

The STEM Foundation's Assured Accreditation is the only standard that provides independent, industry-backed validation of the quality of an institution’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics provision. To achieve the STEM Assured status, Havering College was assessed on our capability to design and deliver STEM courses that keep pace with emerging technology and the evolving needs of employers. As a measure of a College’s success, accreditation is crucial.

The Vice Principal of Havering College, Asfa Sohail commented:

"We are absolutely delighted to have received the STEM Assured validation for our work both across the College and in partnership with the STEM industry sectors. We look forward to building further, following achieving this top level award."

The STEM Foundation's Validation Panel reviewed the College’s self-assessment, along with feedback from both staff and students, and then carried out their own assessment, considering the College's strategy and planning, innovations, and design and delivery.

STEM AssuredThe STEM Foundation were very impressed with the focus on STEM’s significance and its importance within the College as a whole. They recognised the success with the rail industry where employment was secured by 86% of students. They also made some positive recommendations, all of which the College are now implementing.

They felt the College was 'a forward-thinking institution that has embraced the ethos of STEM innovation in all its activities'. They acknowledged the College haves 'a clear capability to stimulate and deliver innovative STEM provision across its value chain to enable student development, employability and support business growth acceleration in the region'.

Guided by the Benchmarking Criteria set out by the UK Innovation Council, the STEM Assured Accreditation Panel agreed that the self-assessment, underpinned by the site visit and supporting evidence, demonstrated that Havering College is a forward-thinking institution that has embraced the ethos of STEM innovation in all its activities. Therefore, the Council recommended the conferment of the STEM Assured Standard on Havering College from 17th May 2016.

This is a huge accolade which acknowledges the excellent work done by the College’s innovative and committed staff and one for which we are all be immensely proud.

Michael Gray's Review of Blood Wedding

Havering College Blood Wedding Sophie Honeywell Ben Antoniades

Lorca's Spain is light years away from 21st century Havering. A bold choice, then, for these drama students, and an impressive attempt at a classic of European theatre.

Julia Stallard's production is pared-back, and very stylish. Black drapes, black costumes, with an occasional, eye-catching splash of colour – the bowl of fruit, the wool, the scarlet shawls. The young actors have learnt the power of stillness, of significant pauses. There is an inner strength in Leah Rowlands' Mother, for example. Words are weighed, souls searched.

It's the poetical text that presents the biggest challenge here – not sure whose translation this is; not, I think, the Tanya Ronder or the Ted Hughes. Sometimes passions have more shrillness than strength. Sam Fava's Leonardo seems the most comfortable with the spoken word – a fine, intense performance. Sophie Honeywell gives a lively characterization, now shy, now feisty, of the young bride who leaves her new husband [Ben Antoniades] to ride off with her lover. A strong presence from Jessica Ravate as La Criada, the servant who tells the Bride of Leonardo's attentions. Good work too from Callum Cresswell as the Father of the Bride, and Rebecca Lawrence, stepping in to the role of Leonardo’s reserved, poised wife at just eight days' notice. Louisa Collins-Farrow plays her mother, as well as one of the Greek chorus Woodcutters.

The later scenes leave naturalism behind, with Moon [Gvidas Milinkis] and Beggarwoman [Lucy Mason] witnesses to the distant tragedy. It's the stage pictures, often imaginatively lit, which stay in the mind – the blood red moon, the bearers and the biers, the double portrait with gifts – and the contrasts: closeness amid the decorous distance, like the two profiles in a rare moment of intimacy, or spontaneity, such as the girls' greeting, amid the solemn formality.

Created to find the best catering student, the college held a competition that tested the student’s ability to cater at a fine dining level.

All students were given a menu with a choice of wines. They had to set up a table to the correct fine dining standard which included clean and polished tableware, a precisely laid table cloth, cutlery and glassware appropriate to the menu and napkins folded in four different ways. The table had to be fully set with condiments, flowers and a table number and this all had to be achieved within 30 minutes. Finally, students had to ensure that their uniforms were correct and smart

It was a close competition with the final decision going to professional judge Laura Jelly, a former catering student from Havering College. Laura had attended the course 13 years ago and is now a sous chef at The Marriott Hotel, London.

The winner was Ethan Cameron, a full time student studying Diploma Level 2 in Professional Cookery and Level 2 in Food & Beverage Service.

Ethan, proved to be the best student from the whole catering team this year when asked to prepare the restaurant for a “Fine Dining Event”, with different types of napkin folds, using high class crookery and glasses within a set time.

Ethan received a trophy, a College Certificate and a complimentary gift voucher for “Fine Dining Dinner” for two at The Holiday Inn, Brentwood. This was presented by Mr. Richard Roberts, Executive Chef, who is a great asset to our College providing our catering students with opportunities for work and also helping the catering team with their assessments.

Tony Pecoraro, The Food Service Lecturer and Restaurant Manager, of The Jubilee Restaurant said: “Ethan was well prepared for the competition and demonstrated excellent restaurant skills throughout the day”.

Dance Showcase 2016 - Curtain Call

Performing arts

Within moments of opening, it became very apparent that Curtain Call wasn’t just an average college performance. This was a show with all the hallmarks of a West End production, worthy of being performed on stage in any London theatre.

The eclectic mix of dance, including Burlesque extravaganza, elegant Ballet, expressive Flamenco, street style Hip-Hop and more, combined with live vocal performances kept the audience totally engaged and wanting more.

The choreography was seamless and interpretative with detailed, energetic movements throughout. It blended perfectly with the variety of music and as a result, brought the auditorium to life. Although the cast was predominantly female, the blend of male dancers was perfect, giving an extra sparkle to each performance.

The humorous vocal banter between two strong singers, Lauren Ghost and Molly Taylorson proved to a real crowd pleaser, with both vocalists vying to get the limelight. During the ‘fight’ sequence they used the power of their voices and a repertoire of top musical songs to outdo each other. This was possibly the highlight of the production

The students should be deservedly proud of their achievement, giving their audience far more than was anticipated. They proved to be a diverse and exciting new generation of performers who are set to make their mark on the theatrical world.

Students Clear up in Construction Competitions

$

In March of this year, Havering College’s Level 1 Bricklaying student, Frazer Nichols, impressed the judges with his skills and took first place in the North West London Competition. In May, Level 2 bricklayers Daniel Robins and Jordan-Lea Thorn also proved how talented they were when they won second and third places respectively in the Barking & Dagenham Brick Skills Competition. On the basis of the skills they had so clearly demonstrated, it really was a no brainer that they be entered in the Skillbuild Regional Heats. This is a competition that sees the very best in construction talent compete to be crowned the SkillBuild winner. Simply being entered into such a prestigious competition is an accolade in itself.

All three students were well prepared to take part in the biggest construction skills competition in the UK. They understood that competition would be fierce but refused to be intimidated. Their determination was driven by the fact that should they be successful, they may then be selected to join TEAM UK who would be participating in the world skills competition next year at Abu Dhabi.

Frazer, Daniel and Jordan performed impeccably on behalf of Havering College as they went head to head with some of the best apprentices around the country. It was a long and exhausting day for the students as they worked hard at deciphering complex drawing. Observers reviewed their work and made numerous positive comments, including that the quality of their work exceeded the industry standard.

It was a closely fought competition with Havering College’s Frazer Nichols coming third and winning the Bronze Medal. At only 15 years old, Frazer’s potential is very impressive. He is keen to perform as a senior and is hoping to earn a place at World Skills 2018.

The Certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP) is a new Level 3 qualification designed by Skills for Justice, the Sector Skills Council for the Police and the College of Policing, as a pre-join option for the position of Constable.

From April 2013, all applicants wishing to join the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) as a regular police constable will be required to hold the CKP as delivered through a College of Policing approved provider. It is expected that over the forthcoming months other forces will make similar announcements.

Havering College is an Approved Provider. Our Trainers and Assessors are ex- and serving police officers, who between them have decades of operational policing experience. They are qualified and experienced police trainers, police recruit assessors, NVQ assessors and internal verifiers. Our course meets the standards required by the National College of Policing.

Delivered by qualified police trainers, learning will cover essential knowledge and practice from providing an initial response, initial support to victims and witnesses, interviewing and search techniques through to arrest. The course will also include advice on the preparation for the police selection process, including advice on the health and fitness test.

Unlike courses offered elsewhwere, we do not just deliver the basic theory. Our course is a couple of days longer than most and delivered through a blended approach which comprises taught sessions, discussion, role play, staged scenarios, guest speakers and self-directed study - all designed to reinforce the learning process through linking it to real police practice. You will also benefit from access to approved, specialised online learning resources available on the College of Policing web-based learning environment (NCALT).

2016 End of Year Fashion Shoot

For this year's final show, Level 3 Fashion students and staff came together to produce a series of videos showcasing their individual final major project fashion lines in different locations around our Ardleigh Green campus. Each student got the opportunity to provide art direction and chose the music for a 30 second video, creatively responding to their allocated shooting location with the trend and design of their fashion line in mind.

It was a fantastic portrayal of each of our designs with the scenes linking to our chosen trends. I felt that each of the videos gave us great experience in a way of styling and directing how we wanted our work to be seen. I was delighted with the final video as in my video I managed to get the theme across of romance and love in a Pre-Raphaelite setting. My family and friends all enjoyed the showreel and can't believe how professional it looked.

- Chloe Clay, 2016 Level 3 Fashion Student

Joana Giedrikaite - Bedroom Eyes

Celine, Givenchy and Dior were in Joana’s sight when designing her collection of garments. With a combination of empire line and princess style, these garments have lace overlays giving the bodices a soft, elegant appearance. Styled simply with heels and fascinator, these garments would be the collection of choice for young wedding guests.

Sophie Monteiro - Bedroom Eyes

The glamour of burlesque and the notion of underwear as outerwear has brought Sophie to a colour palette of pink sugared almonds coupled with the silkiness and shimmer of satin. The screen-printed rose motif brings a sense of elegance which, together with the princess line and rouleaux straps, makes her garments a must-have in the wardrobes of young party-goers.

Patrycja Sajdak - Isn’t It Romantic?

Inspired by the Romantic period and the ethos behind Bohemianism, Patrycja proposes a collection of garments that, with simple lines, lets the softly-hued satin do all the talking. The variety of hem length coupled with daring plunge v-neck offer alternatives with sleeve options while the embellishment with floral print provides a focus. Chloé and Zandra Rhodes have been Patrycja’s guide meaning that Patrycja will be the go-to designer for trendy professionals.

Charlotte Tabram - Bedroom Eyes

Charlotte’s collection is based on the allure of satin and lace and a soft, pastel colour palette. The full slip style with lace straps and elegant princess line reminiscent of burlesque is embellished with a simple screen-printed bow motif at centre front. Sexy and alluring, this collection shows off the figure and could be styled up for a wedding or cocktail party with heels and perhaps a pashmina.

Renée Maltwood - Latin Class

An abundance of flounces, screen-printed butterflies and scalloped finishes are features of Renee’s collection which, together with shimmering satin, show off the softly-hued mauves. The rouleaux straps and princess line offer an understated elegance that dazzle on the dance floor.

Danny Wallace - Bedroom Eyes

Danny’s collection is centred on the exploration of the concept of underwear as outerwear but with an eye on modesty. The main influence for this collection is based on the materials associated with intimate apparel such as lace and silk while choosing a muted colour palette of gold and black. Having explored the collections of McQueen and Valentino, Danny has produced a range of special occasion wear for contemporary young professionals who favour his close eye for detail.

Chloe Clay - Isn’t It Romantic?

Based on a traditional rendering of the notion of romance, Chloe has designed and produced full-length dresses that carry large-scale appliqué motifs symbolic of this trend such as blooms and cupids with their bows and arrows poised. Influential to Chloe’s ideas were the collections of London’s National Portrait Gallery, the Pre-Raphaelites and designers including Dolce & Gabbana and Erdem. These dresses would look equally as good in a ballroom as they do in woodland.

Gabriele Raudonyte - Blue Jeans Baby
