It’s been an exciting morning at Havering College as today was the day students received their GCSE results. This summer, the results were a mix of GCSE English Language and maths. Some students were taking their exams for the first time, others were re-sitting their exams to get a place on their chosen course. The atmosphere was a mix of anticipation and excitement as students opened their envelopes.

Just before Sarah Hill, a 42 year old Care Worker opened her results, she told us

“I’m trembling, I am so nervous, I have really worked hard”

Sarah needed to achieve grade C or above in maths to start her Access course in Midwifery. It was an anxious moment for her but was worth the wait.

“I can’t believe it, I’ve got an A, I haven’t studied in 25 years and have managed to get an A in maths. This means I can start my Access course in September”

This was a result she hasn’t been expecting and one that meant she would be able to start her new course in September. Sarah is looking forward to her brighter future and encourages anyone looking at learning something new, to see what Havering College has to offer.

Pearl Fernandez, one of last year’s Level 3 Graphic Design students was relieved to have achieved an A* in her GCSE maths after studying hard since moving to the UK three years ago.

“I’m so happy…it’s such a relief’

Pearl completed a week’s work experience with Members Only Clothing Company in Rainham whilst studying at the college. The company liked Pearl so much they have invited her back to complete a second week of work experience with a view to taking her on as a paid intern in the future.

This has been such a positive year for learners taking their GCSEs. Both learners and staff have worked extremely hard and this is apparent by the overall results.

Havering College of Further & Higher Education is open to give support and guidance at results time should you need to discuss your options.

Should you want to enrol on a new or different course, there is still time. Find out more at the Ardleigh Green Campus Open Event, Saturday the 3rd of September, 10 – 4 pm. You’ll be able to take a tour of the campus, see the college facilities and talk to the tutors about the courses you’re interested in.
